Free Photo Editing Software

With these photo editing software packages you can do much more than with the photo viewer software found elsewhere on this site.  With these packages you can use a variety of effects, filters, and conversions to make your masterpiece.  Many of these packages also use Adobe Photoshop filters.  Many of these programs do much of what Photoshop does for free. While they may not have all the bells and whistles of Photoshop they may meet the need of most people who need to edit photos and as always: They Are Free!

Once again make sure you have all other programs closed when installing these programs. Also make sure you have enough ram or memory. Most of these programs will run with 1 to 2 mb of ram with Windows XP and XP Pro but may require more to run Vista because Vista is a memory hog. Although most of these programs seem to run fine with 2 mb of ram on Vista it depends upon your machine set up as well as your video card.

Gimp

Gimp is an image manipulation program that actually competes with Adobe Photoshop in many respects.  It can be used as simple paint program to a complex image photo manipulation and converter. It has channels, layers, filters, and masks just to mention a few and it is compatible with Adobe Photoshop including using the same filters. Picasa 

Picasa comes from Google but don't let that deter you. Picasa is neat program for finding, editing, organizing, and sharing your photos. It doesn't have all the ability of Gimp but it has enough of it to remove red eye and do basic image manipulation. You can also share photos by email with it and it makes nifty little photo albums.  Phobie

Phobie is an advanced image program that supports layers and masks. Phobie comes with many filters and can also use many Adobe Photoshop filters. You can do a lot of image manipulation with Phobie and you can even create gif animations. Phobie can also create high quality PDF files.  I am impressed with speed of the program and you can really do some fast manipulation of images.
